The following is a rough draft of the flyer we are planning to distribute at the Mountain Community Resource Center next Tuesday.  Please comment with additions, corrections, and questions.  And, of course, join us to seek answers to these questions.

Mountain Community Resource Center:
Calling Cops on Sick & Disabled Outside Nearby?

  • Why did the Center instruct sheriffs to accost people under their eaves or by their building after a week of frosty and freezing temperatures?
  • With no shelter available in San Lorenzo Valley, did the sheriffs force a man with a fever out of his tent on the edge of the Center’s property because of that Center Trespass instruction?
  • Did the sheriffs then handcuff, brutalize, & arrest an elderly woman videoing the eviction, damaging her shoulder and preventing her videoing of the 1-28 incident?
  • Is the Center in effect using the sheriffs as “goon squads” to frighten away those setting up nighttime survival tents with the false narrative that there is “adequate shelter” in Santa Cruz?
  • Is the Center and its parent organization Community Bridges remaining silent while sheriffs illegally drive away homeless folks sleeping on public property with no other place to go?
Ask these questions.  Require fair treatment of those outside.

Two weeks ago we distributed an earlier flyer with similar questions and spoke with the management seeking reassurances.  Instead the Center's answer was a trespass letter denying unhoused people access even to the outside shelter of the building from wind and rain.
Here is the text of the earlier flyer:

Mountain Resource Center:
Turning People Out Into the Rain?

  • Were homeless folks being cut off from services if they sheltered themselves from the rain under the vacant eaves of the MRC?
  • Was the homeless community being punished for charging their phones at the MRC?
  • Were they denied showers unless they signed agreements to stay away for a month?
  • Have sheriff’s deputies been used to order people off the property for simply seeking shelter under the eaves?
  • Is Felton losing its heart and tolerance towards the poor?

Ask these questions.  Require fair treatment of those outside.
